Description: Job Summary:

The Vice Chancellor for Research, Biologic Resources Laboratory is seeking (2) Veterinary Technician (s) I. The Veterinary Technician I position functions independently within a laboratory research environment and expected to support individual cases, studies, or special projects with minimal oversight within an area of the BRL. The Veterinary Technician I works to supply para-professional assistance to other veterinary technician(s), veterinarians, or investigator staff in the areas of anesthesiology, diagnostic laboratory procedures, antibody production, preventive health program, environmental enrichment, etc.  Similar services are provided to investigators depending upon the needs of their experimental protocols.

Duties: Key Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Supervisory Duties:  Oversight of individual cases, procedures, or projects within the BRL.  This oversight includes the ability to plan for, organize, gather materials, complete necessary paperwork, clean up after, and trouble-shoot assigned cases, procedures and special projects.  It does not include the supervision of other staff members.
  • Administrative support:  Completes paperwork relevant to assigned tasks such as colony inventory spreadsheets, anesthetic monitoring forms, health information sheets, and environmental enrichment logs. Completes requisitions as supplies are depleted.  Performs routine data entry for billing purposes. Inventories supplies and equipment. Ships samples when necessary. Orders supplies.  Generates receiving report. Provides estimates of costs to investigators for routine, simple procedures. Ability to work independently during short-term absence of a supervisor.       
  • Teaching: Demonstrates and teaches technical skills such as catheter placement, intubation, and injection technique to students, residents, animal care staff, investigator staff, other veterinary technicians or others as the need arises; in addition to  presenting  topics in a poster format or give a short talk. 
  • Surgical Support:  helps maintain surgery schedules and organizes set-up of rooms, supplies, and equipment for multiple procedures on the same or consecutive days. Anticipates and provides for needs of investigators or veterinarians during procedures, cleans room, instruments, and equipment.
  • Diagnostic Laboratory: Assists with maintaining diagnostic laboratory schedule. Collects, processes, and/or runs samples for various diagnostic procedures including microbiological, parasitological, hematological, and chemical analysis. Proficient with laboratory procedures for Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) level processes.
  • Anesthesia: Induces anesthesia, monitors vitals of anesthetized animals, adjusts anesthetic levels or seeks advice from veterinarian or more experienced technicians to adjust levels, recover animals, clean, maintain equipment, and replenish supplies, including ordering of anesthetic agents, and equipment crucial for anesthetic procedures.
  • Animal colony health:  provides support to maintain the health of animal colonies including the rodent rederivation, sentinel health testing, and environmental enrichment programs for the diverse group of species common to research including: mice, rats, and nonhuman primates.
  • Equipment: Calibrates, utilizes and maintains a variety of precision equipment including equipment necessary to perform diagnostic laboratory tests, anesthetic machines, radiologic equipment, and surgical equipment.
  • Security Clearance:  Obtains security clearances as needed such as Department of Justice clearance to work with regulated radiation sources or select agents.
  • Quality Assurance Program: Schedules and performs necessary quality assurance (QA) tests.
  • Support Services: Provides support to investigators, research users, and veterinarians for research projects as needed. Includes irradiation of animals or specimens, provides technical support inside biosafety level 2 and 3 areas, and other areas requiring knowledge and ability to improve the care of research subjects and/or outcomes of research projects.  Communicates directly with individuals from other areas of the department to prepare orders for supplies to be used throughout the BRL.  
  • Nursing Care: Requires the ability to assess and skills necessary to provide appropriate care including bandaging, intubation, taking vitals, injections, administering treatments, restraining animals, assisting with examinations, euthanizing animals, and similar according to the needs of the project and/or the animals. 
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Required:

  • Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
  • Current certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
  • One (1) year (12 months) of paramedical veterinary experience comparable to that performed at the Veterinary Technician (General) level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
