Description |
The Animal Resources Center at the University of Chicago is looking for an Animal Health Technicians for its Rodent Clinical Services. The duties of these positions are described below. Qualifications include an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA-approved training program, and certification as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) in the state of Illinois (or the equivalent in another state), with three to five years of animal related experience, including some experience with procedures described below. Training in research using animals, previous employment caring for research animals either medically or in animal husbandry, and certification at one of the three levels offered by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is preferred. Alternate educational routes (such as a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, with considerable on the job experience) will be considered. The University offers an excellent benefit package and competitive salary. Current salary range for these positions is $18.00 – $23.50/ hour. Responsibilities include breeding and maintenance of unique stocks and strains of mice within specific pathogen free barriers, in addition to sample collection for genotype determination and associated record keeping; primary responsibility for sample collections for the institutional murine sentinel monitoring program; involvement in the murine quarantine program; and participation in the embryo transfer and caesarian section rederivation programs. Continued growth in the rodent census provides a unique opportunity to acquire new techniques and skills. Close involvement with multiple investigators requires excellent organizational and communication skills. Prior experience in rodent genetics and/or maintenance of rodent stocks and strains, use of barrier techniques to maintain specific pathogen free animals, and experience in performing surgical procedures in rodents are preferred, but may be learned on the job.
