    A Veterinarian works in the fast paced Medical/Shelter Division of the city's Animal Care and Control Facility participating in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disorders of animals impounded.

    • performs various types of surgeries including routine neuters and spays at the Animal Control Facility or other approved location.
    • conducts euthanasia by injection of animals as needed
    • observes animals suspected of rabies and takes appropriate action
    • performs inoculations of animals to prevent contagious diseases
    • assesses physical demeanor of animals and proposes recommendations for adoption, transfer/rescue or euthanasia.
    • conducts inspections of animal hospitals and animal related businesses
    • supervises the maintenance of records of drugs administered, medical procedures performed, adoptions and redemptions
    • educates the public regarding animal health, behavior and humane care and treatment
    • performs related duties as required

    THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

    Must be currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Illinois.

    NOTE: This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

    AND
    Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
    1. Experience performing surgical procedures on animals including spaying and neutering
    2. Experience working in an animal shelter environment
    3. Drug Enforcement Administration License

    North Central Veterinary Emergency Center (NCVEC) is seeking a full-time experienced emergency Veterinarian to join our talented team at our state of the art facility adjacent to the Purdue North Central campus in Westville, IN. We are looking for a team member who is excited about the opportunity to grow and develop an exceptional emergency hospital. Our ideal candidate will have a passion for emergency medicine, excellent communication skills, love for both animals and people and be a team player.

    You will have the opportunity to use and expand your skills in clinical medicine and surgery. Our state of the art 9,000 SF facility opened in 2003 and includes modern surgical suites, an in-house laboratory, and we schedule referral ophthalmology during the weekdays.     The City of Chicago Dept of Animal Care and Control is looking for a Supervising Veterinarian. This position will be responsible for supervising and evaluating employees, managing projects, ordering drugs, and serving as a subject matter expert to lower level staff. The position will also be responsible for taking ownership of every animal in the Animal Care Facility and ensuring adequate staffing levels. This position will play a key role in the dissemination of information, completion of veterinarian reports and interaction with the media. This position will also serve as an expert witness in court, assist with animal related legislation, advise the director on policies and procedures and testify at budget hearings.

    • Supervises medical and shelter staff engaged in the care, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of every animal at the Animal Care and Control Center
    • Monitors the diagnostic, non-surgical and surgical treatment of sick and injured animals to ensure adherence to established protocols and procedures
    • Establishes and implements standards to ensure the healthy and humane maintenance of animals at the center
    • Supervises the performance of various types of surgeries including routine neuters and spays and provides surgical or medical guidance as needed
    • Trains Veterinarians and other staff in the use of tranquilizing equipment and proper euthanasia procedures
    • Oversees the examination of impounded animals and Chicago Police Department canines for diseases or injuries and the observation of animals suspected of rabies
    • Supervises the performance of inoculations by the medical staff
    • Assesses physical demeanor of animals and makes recommendations for adoption
    • Monitors inventory and controls the ordering of drugs and medical supplies
    • Supervises Veterinarians performing annual inspections of animal hospitals and animal related businesses
    • Oversees the maintenance of records relating to drugs ordered, medical procedures performed and adoptions and redemptions
    • Acts as the facility's manager in the absence of the Executive Director
    • Performs duties of a Veterinarian as needed
    • Represents the department at community meetings and serves as the liaison with operating departments to provide information concerning ther proper treatment and care of animals

    THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE

     

    Two years of work experience in the practice of Veterinary Medicine. Must be currently licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Illinois. Must receive Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license within 90 days of hire.

    AND

    Preference will be given to candidates with one year of supervisory experience in a large shelter or Veterinary practice.
